Plants, Lichen/Fungi

Gambier Island is rich in varieties and species of plants, lichen and funghi. Walking through the forest on the island one can imagine a time when First Nations people enjoyed a rich abundance of natural resources. They utilized a great variety of plants for berries, fruits and edible roots, tubers and bulbs and gathered many plants for their medicinal qualities.

Taking care when working the land, staying on the designated trails and practice only ethical foraging will help keep our biodiversity healthy as these plants nourish wildlife in many forms.

Take care to look carefully when you are walking in the forest. Observe and record plants, lichen and Fungi on iNaturalist to help identify species and add to our inventory the Átl’ka7tsem Howe Sound region.
