Saving the Wild Heart Campaign
In 2013 we learned that two Provincial Public land woodlots in the wild heart of Gambier Island were to be created and 25-year leases given by the Province of BC for logging the land. Together with citizens, residents and the broader community, we launched a petition and letter-writing campaign to stop the logging. We hired a lawyer to prepare a judicial review and provided advance notice to the Attorney General’s department that an application to the Supreme Court of BC would be submitted on behalf of the Conservancy. We feel that this notice plus a letter to Government by the affected First Nations were major factors in the government's decision not to proceed further with the process to accept an applicant to log the woodlots. Finally in November 2014 we learned the good news the Province declined. This was excellent news for those that know the value of this island is greater for the whole than the profits for a few. The following campaign posters were created by Director Tim Turner.
