Wildlife

Gambier Island is home to a large variety of mammals large and small. The Howe Sound islands are a hotspot for species at risk. Getting to know our species is valuable when sharing the land with wildlife and helping to protect their habitats.

The most visible mammals on the island are the coastal Black-Tailed deer, but the island is home to cougar, wolves, squirrels, martens and the occasional black bear. In damp areas, you may see Rough-Skin Newts and Pacific Treefrogs. Salamanders and garter snakes are commonly found.

Striking balance between humans and wildlife is a challenge. As human populations along with their domestic animals increase, conflicts do as well. Living to co-exist with native species is important to keeping the biodiversity on the island.

Gambier Island’s Riparian area bylaws seek to protect important and rare wetland species. Learn more about our wildlife and how to protect important habitat under Resources.
