At least ten watersheds on Cha7élkwnech / Gambier Island lead to the ocean in all directions. These freshwater ecosystems are home to a variety of fish, amphibian, invertebrate, and other species.
Streams are critical for fish spawning and rearing habitat. The GIC, together with other partner organizations, are monitoring five of the fish-bearing creeks on the island, helping to fill important data gaps. This citizen science project engages communities from across the island in learning how to care for their local creeks through establishing baseline monitoring practices to support watershed health and biodiversity conservation in the long-term.
